PATI BAZTÁN:
In her artistic journey, Pati Baztán embraces a universal language resonating with the profound emotions that art can evoke. Rejecting the societal machinery of false needs and superficial information, she strives for authenticity. Baztán's work seeks a connection with the primal, untainted reality, untouched by consumerism and prejudice.
Through the interplay of material density and silence, her creations engage in a brutal dialogue that transcends human reasoning. Unyielding in her acceptance of mistakes, Baztán's art emerges as a genuine reflection of a slow and true observation, a small yet integral part of a larger, unaltered reality.
A limited series of Baztán’s work will be on display at our Pop-Up Gallery exhibition from December 2nd to December 31st in Barcelona, to learn more about the event please click here.
WHAT themes and ideas inspire you in your art?
BAZTÁN: Life in general - everything can be a source of inspiration for me.
what process of creating a work of art is most unique or important to you?
BAZTÁN: For me it is important to disconnect the mind, to enter into a spontaneous and intuitive creative process where intellectuality does not come into play. With this I seek the result to be more sincere and personal, I am interested in what is real without fleeting external interferences.
what materials, techniques or medium do you prefer to use un your artwork and why?
BAZTÁN: I try to work with environmentally friendly materials such as a natural water-based pigment or organic cotton fabric. I don’t want to be a participant in the destruction that we are generating on the planet.
BAZTÁN: Luckily I have no idea, I’m interested in art that flows naturally, without too many preconceived ideas that restrict it. What I am very clear about is that I will go where it is most difficult for me, I am not interested in comfort, I believe more in completely uncontrolled creation, I see more possibilities in that field.
how do you see your style and creative approach evolving over time?
what role do you see art playing in today’s society?
BAZTÁN: I see the society to which I belong as an unstoppable machine generating false needs and quick empty information, the novelties are usually collages of already existing things and I think it is really difficult to get away from all this to be placed in an authentic plane, where the forms depend on the background and not the opposite, where the head and heart are aligned and what is generated is true.
In that place I believe that art has to be on the first step of the slow and true observation of what would become the natural reality, the undistorted by consumerism, fear, shame or prejudice, this reality supported by nature and understood by the most primitive vision that every human being has at birth, the child’s clean look, that of the artist as well.
How do your personal or life experiences influence your art?
BAZTÁN: As I try to deactivate my mind at the moment of creation and try to connect with my deepest self, that is, with my intuition and my subconscious, I would not know how to answer this question exactly, since for me it is not a conscious process, but I imagine that in this case, everything influences me, especially in the moment in which I am when I work, my own sensations and innermost feelings.
how do you evaluate the success or effect of your artwork on the audience?
BAZTÁN: It’s always nice if the work you do is liked by the public, but it’s not something that keeps me awake at night. Especially because, as we all know, it’s impossible to please everyone, besides, if it were something that worried me, my work would lose its personality, it would become superfluous.
I think that art has to be something that is above being liked, it has to be alien to fashions, it would also be good if it became unqualifiable, the great works of history, many of them, have been ahead of their time. They have not been understood at the time, they have been so revolutionary that there was no language then that could explain them.
what challenges have you encountered in your creative process and how have you dealt with them?
BAZTÁN: Every time I paint it is a new challenge for me. I like to take my works to the limit, to play with the uncontrolled, the error is one of my working tools, I am always in continuous dialogue with my paintings that do not stop challenging me.
are there any special projects or works that you would like to highlight or share with the audience?
BAZTÁN: An installation I made for the Performing Arts Fair in Tárrega marked a before and after in my painting.
I painted a canvas of about 500 squared meters with which I had to cover an industrial building. Because it was something very big and I was worried about using products that would damage the environment, I discovered by accident the painting technique I am working with now, which I’ve called Earth Skin. That project marked my way of painting.
What future projects or ideas do you plan to realise in your art?
BAZTÁN: I would like to get a scholarship and move to another country where I only have to paint, get a technique that is 100% ecological and have my own language that does not even need to be explained, that speaks for itself. This is my letter to Santa Claus!
